Celebrating the IB’s 40th anniversary - the Peterson Lectures
By Lee Davis • Jun 4th, 2008 • Category: Teaching and learningOn 18 April 2008, the IB celebrated its fortieth anniversary in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. On this occasion, the annual Peterson Lecture was delivered by His Highness the Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, and the founder and Chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).
His Highness the Aga Khan spoke on “Global Education and the Developing World”, a topic of great relevance to the IB itself and also to IB schools and teachers.
We invite IB teachers to watch the Peterson Lecture and to comment on some of the big questions that it poses to educators worldwide - at a time when the IB looks back on 40 years of international education, and considers new challenges for the future.
A video of the speech, with the ability to comment, can be found here (please feel free to circulate to colleagues):
“Global education and the developing world” - His Highness the Aga Khan

For those who attended the CASIE/IB Global Language Convention in Atlanta, April 2008, the comments of His Highness the Aga Khan are particularly relevant. His insights into the needs for a truly global perspective into education for the future are well thought out and profound and can serve as a genuine starting point for onward discussion. Language is a key component of developing international mindedness, and it is well worthwhile for educators to read the set of “Linguistic Rights” published in the 2003 UNESCO position paper Education in a Multilingual world. So, I urge people to watch His Highness’s address to the leading IB educators in the world, and to join with him and us in seeking ways to make his vision a reality.
