“Engage me!”
By Lee Davis • Jul 23rd, 2008 • Category: Teaching and learning, Video, YouTubePlease find below a YouTube video B Nesbitt created to “inspire teachers to use technology in engaging ways to help students develop higher level thinking skills. Equally important, it serves to motivate district level leaders to provide teachers with the tools and training to do so.”
Paul Fairbrother and I used it at the most recent IBNA conference in San Francisco. It went down very well with school leadership who told us they will show it to their teaching faculty as soon as the new school year begins.
I hope it helps you too:

The video is great because we all know our students are e-learners but many teachers feel that language should be taught during IT class. Following the IB thoughts…”Learning language in a PYP classroom extends beyond the classroom walls, and has close connections to the central school library/media centre and to other classrooms. The PYP classroom is also connected to the broader world through technology: students research and communicate not only through printed media, but also through global electronic networks, in order to access a vast range of multimedia resources. A PYP teacher’s personal knowledge of language teaching and learning is of key importance. What teachers themselves understand shapes which resources they choose, what learning experiences they design and how effectively they teach.”
In my opinion we need to think we have multi-lingual classes because although all our students may speak the same L1, or a common language, many of them also have this other language that may be the only language that is shared by every student. They may be able to construct understanding more efficiently using this “e-language”. Do we consider that when we plan, assess, observe? I am not sure we do.
Thank you! It is a great inspiration to keep trying to engage our students.
Great video!! I can’t wait to share this with other teachers!
