One Response to Responsible action: Part 3

I would spend a part of each class period watching the news with the students. I think that this is a neglected area of education. I would have students watch different networks and different social media to try to determine if a particular one had a consistent particular bias or point of view.

I would find an activity that examined religious views on the global challenge in question as well as more general religious attitudes toward sharing, tithing, being responsible for others. I would contrast the individualization values of the U.S. with those of other nations or communities in other parts of the non-Westrnized world.

I would look for short stories or a short novel….maybe Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” as a way of showing how values influence behavior…and how the values get lost over time.

Or a story that shows how contrasting values can lead to fights and even war. Any of our present world conflicts could serve this purpose.
Republicans vs. Democrats regarding the immigration issue.
