Saturday, 18 April: Arrive in Zanzibar

Sunday, 19 April: Suggested free activity: day at Mangapwani Beach, to be arranged through Serena

  • 19:00 – 20:00  Welcome, presentation of Academies programme and AKDN activities in Zanzibar and ‘getting acquainted’ activities (Serena)
  • 20:00 onwards  Dinner at Serena

Monday, 20 April

  • 08:30 – 12:00  Orientation and visit to Zanzibar restoration project in Stone Town – guided walking tour (guide: Historian John Da Silva)
  • 12:00 – 13:00  Lunch at Serena
  • 14:00 – 17:30  Curriculum and organizational work session (AKDN office)
  • 19:00 – 20:30  Session on Zanzibar history: talk by Professor Abdul Sherif, Zanzibar Indian Ocean Research Institute (Serena)
  • 20:30 onwards  Dinner at Serena

Tuesday, 21 April

  • 08:30 – 09:00  Pick up from Hotel and drive to community Madrasa (pre-school)
  • 09:00 – 10:00  Visit a community owned preschool, see teaching and learning environment, meet pre-school teachers and members of school management committee
  • 10:00 – 10:30  Drive back to Stone town and go to Madrasa resource centre office
  • 10:30 – 12:00  Visit centre, model classroom, meet and discuss with staff, question and answer, exchange experiences
  • 12:00 – 13:00  Lunch at Serena
  • 14:00 – 17:30  Debrief, reflection, curriculum work session (AKDN Office)
  • 19:00 – 20:30  Panel presentation on chosen topics about Zanzibar history and culture (Serena) Panelists: Farouque Abdallah (fashion); John da Silva (art); Hilda Kiel (traditional music; history of tarab); Yusuf Mahmoud (festival); Mshai Mwangola (kanga/lesso: cloth); Yvonne Owuor (film, culture)
  • 20:30 onwards  Dinner at Serena

Wednesday, April 22

  • 09:00 – 10:30  Presentations and discussion with Mshai Mwangola and Yvonne Owuor from the future Aga Khan University Arts and Sciences Faculty in Dar-es-Salaam on the interdisciplinary core programme for the future faculty: aims, themes, concepts (AKDN office)
  • 10:30 – 13:00  Spice tour
  • 13:00 – 14:00  Lunch at Serena
  • 14:00 – 17:30  Debrief, reflection, planning, curriculum work session (AKDN office)
  • 17:30 – 18:30  Visit to Dhow Countries Music Academy and refreshments
  • 19:00 – 20:00  Dinner at Serena
  • 20:00 – 21:30  Depart from Serena and visit Maulidi Ya Homu rehearsal

Thursday, 23 April

  • 08:15 – 08:30  Pick up from the hotel and drive to Rahaleo Health Facility
  • 08:30 – 09:15  Briefing about the health facility, concept of Public-Private Partnership, cost sharing and visit the health facility
  • 09:15 – 09:30  Drive to Mtopepo community
  • 09:30 – 10:45  Visit community projects and have discussion with school management committee, teacher and have a look on classroom environment
  • 10:45 – 11:00  Drive back to NGO Resource Centre office
  • 11:00 – 11:45  Presentation about NGORC, see the mini library, see the NGO dataset, discussion, question and answer session
  • 12:00 – 13:00  Lunch at Serena
  • 14:00 – 18:00  Debrief, reflection, curriculum work session (AKDN Office)
  • 19:30 onwards Dinner at Serena

Friday, 24 April

  • 09:00 – 12:00  National Museum (teachers to concentrate on areas of their choice, depending on their chosen topic for curriculum development)
  • 13:30 – 14:30  Lunch at Serena
  • 14:00 – 18:00  Debrief, reflection, curriculum work session (AKDN Office)
  • 19:30 onwards  Depart hotel for celebration dinner on beach at Mtoni Marine
