Briley Rossiter, an MYP student, published an illustrated children’s book at the age of 11. The story was inspired by true events, capturing the loving relationship between herself and her sister Ainsley suffering from Infantile Neuroaxonal Dystrophy.
Tell us about the inspiration for writing your book.
I’m a strong believer in the fact that everything happens for a reason. I believe people are put into our lives with a purpose. Some people come to help you, others come to challenge you, and others come because they need you. Ainsley is special. I believe she has come to do all of these things. Ainsley is the inspiration. This is her legacy. I’m just her voice. The voice she can’t use on her own.
Why do you think the book has been so well-received, why has it touched so many people?
Everyone is unique; with a different path to follow. Nobody can truly relate to my family’s life, but I think our story helps them to look at life from a different point of view. I hope my book impacts and inspires them. Reading about two young girls who have beaten the odds seems to motivate people. Something goes off inside of them and makes them feel determined to try. That’s what inspires them. How they are able to interpret it and relate it to their life.
What books do you like to read and what authors inspire you?
I like to read books with true stories or stories that could happen. I also love books with lots of adventure. Some of my favourite series are The Hunger Games and Percy Jackson.
After writing my own book, I have an understanding of how difficult it can be. Any author that is able to get a book published inspires me.
What do you do for fun?
I like being around people, which is probably why my favourite thing to do is spend time with my friends and family. I would be lost without them. However, when I am alone, I alsolove to listen to music and reflect upon and write down my thoughts.
Will you write more books?
I love to write. It’s one of my favourite things to do. I don’t play sports (except for running with Ainsley), so writing is how I relieve stress and calm down. Sometimes I don’t even know how I feel until I write it down and read it, if that makes any sense. I especially loved writing my book. I loved sharing Ainsley’s story and I’d love to do it again. I want to write a chapter book (with more prose for older readers) about Ainsley and one day I will.
