Review update

In 2012, the Primary Years Programme (PYP) entered into a comprehensive and rigorous seven-phase review process.

The review offers an ideal opportunity for the IB to examine, enhance and strengthen the PYP curriculum framework at a time of fast paced change, when international-mindedness and access to a high quality primary education are more important than ever before.

Research data gathered over the last two years confirms that the IB’s fastest growing programme remains fit for purpose and that the underpinning educational and philosophical concepts are sound and as relevant today as they were when the PYP was first launched in 1997.

Challenges for our schools emerged however, including the lack of clarity in the articulation and communication of the programme and support for implementation of the framework. The IB will explore both areas further over the coming years.

Consultation is an integral part of the process and a number of working groups have been established to explore key themes, consolidate the research and evidence-base for change and generate a series of options for programme change and development.

The work undertaken to date has identified six major areas for further consultation. These key themes will be outlined more fully in a consultation document, scheduled for publication on the OCC in February 2014 for PYP Heads, coordinators and educators at IB World Schools to consider and comment.

More information on opportunities to collaborate on the review of the PYP will be posted shortly.
